We will discuss what are the parts that make up a person and how to draw them and show details.  Students will be given a pencil and a 12 x 18" piece of paper and instructed to create a self-portrait.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their effort and their ability to make a human likeness.

Strategies (to meet needs of different learning styles):  Encourage the kids to begin every part of the drawing with simple shapes that they're already familiar with--ovals, circles, and rectangles.  Tell them that there is no "right way", that we are simply learning and trying is the key, not mastering.
Activities (Step by Step):  Start with the table.  Have the kids draw the table top and two legs.  Then draw the chair, then the person, then the utensils and other details.
Evaluation: Drawings will be evaluated on the ability to try the new techniques I'm offering.

Artistic/Occupational Influence: Animal illustration.
Strategies (to meet needs of different learning styles): Encourage the kids to begin every part of the drawing with simple shapes that they're already familiar with--ovals, lines and learning to draw a hexagon..  Tell them that there is no "right way", that we are simply learning and trying is the key, not mastering.
Activities (Step by Step): Draw an oval.  Draw a hexagon inside this oval.  Draw lines from the hexagon to the ring of the oval.  Draw another oval.  Divide up the space in between the two ovals with lines.  Add a head with eyes, four legs, and a tail. Add grass and bubbles for an environment, then more turtles if there is time.
Evaluation: Drawings will be evaluated on the ability to try the new techniques I'm offering.
Follow-Up: We will be using these basic techniques of building animals out of basic shapes over and over again.

Activities (Step by Step):  I will draw a number on a 12 x 18" piece of paper and hand it to each student.

The students should turn this number in different orientations and determine what they could change this number into to create a totally new object using the number's form.  For instance, changing a number 4 into a kite.  A background and color can then be added.

 

Evaluation: Creativity is the most important element here.
Follow-Up: more creativity, more surrealism later on.

Activities (Step by Step): Students will be taught how to make rubbings and they will make one of their shoe bottom.  I will then go around a make a rubbing of each student's shoe.  During the next period, the students will take the rubbing that I made and will decorate it with watercolor paints.  They will be told how the wax in the crayon will resist the water of the watercolor paint and it will show through.
Evaluation: Effort and participation.

Artistic/Occupational Influence:Illustrating the story of Santa Claus
Strategies (to meet needs of different learning styles):
Activities (Step by Step):  The students will be given a pencil and piece of 9 x 12" paper.  They will use the balloon technique to draw a picture of Santa Claus and will add elements that will tell the story of Santa Claus bringing his sack of goodies to good boys and girls, i.e. sack, toys, presents, chimney, tree, etc.
Evaluation:  Use of forms rather than sticks for body parts and objects.

Artistic/Occupational Influence: Common
Strategies (to meet needs of different learning styles): Repeat the instruction over and over using a rhyming, rhythmic speech pattern accompanied by the drawing motions.
Activities (Step by Step): Have the students write "Stars" at the top of their paper with their name.  Proceed to have them draw a large plus sign.  In the middle of this, they should make a smaller "X".  They should then draw lines from the tips of the "X" to meet the tips of the plus sign in order to make a 4 pointed star.  After doing this several times, show them how to shade the star effectively.  After this, proceed to 5 pointed stars, 6 pointed stars, etc. as time allows.
Evaluation: No grade, just encouragement.

Activities (Step by Step):  Talk to the students about the flowers that are coming up out of the ground now.  Ask them what types of flowers they know.  As one student offers a flower, demonstrate drawing it on the chalkboard and ask what the different parts of the flower is as you get to each part.  Ask questions referring to size relationships of parts and of flowers.  Repeat for other flowers, giving them techniques for how to draw them.  When the demonstration and discussion is over, mention Georgia O'Keeffe and how she loved to paint flowers and show examples of her work.  Then give the students pencils, crayons, and 12 x 18" paper and ask them to create their own gardens.
Evaluation:  Graded on effort and creating an effective drawing of flowers.

Activities (Step by Step):  The teacher, in advance of the students coming in, will cover a plastic bowl with vaseline and cut many 4 1/2 x 1" strips of green, blue, and violet construction paper.  When the students come in, the teacher will explain how the students will create their sculptures and begin as soon as possible.  Materials will be passed out and the teacher will begin roaming from student to student continuously dousing each student's bowl in white glue.  It is important that  the teacher control the glue.  The students will be encouraged to fill their bowl completely and not leave any gaps.  They should make several layers of paper, each with glue in between and on top.  When the students are finished, these will be placed aside to dry.  After drying, a handle can be added to make an Easter basket.
Evaluation:  Each student will be evaluated according to participation and filling the bowl effectively with glued strips of paper.
